Which is a better certification to have; US Sailing or ASA?

I am looking at going to a sailing school in the SF Bay and am wondering which governing body is better to go with. US Sailing says they are the official governing body. If so, what good is the ASA?

It is my opinion that the ASA is better, as they are more widely recognized.

I think they are both good organizations, but what you should do is try to learn about the specific school and quality of the instructors. US sailing likes to call themselves the official governing body, but that’s their claim and honestly, I don’t see anything other than their word behind it. ASA has been around a long time, offering excellent courses. Although there is a lot of overlap, I think US Sailing is geared a bit more towards smaller boats and racing and ASA is more about larger boats, recreation and cruising.
Again, my advice is to learn as much as you can about the particular sailing school and it’s course contents instead of focusing too much on the organization.
